In previous days, anyone setting up their home would start off with a matching dining table and chairs. You wouldn’t have to think about whether the pieces looked good together.
Today the trend is to complement the dining chairs to the dining table. Whilst it is a more interesting combination it is more challenging. The key to success is to be consistent. Therefore before investing in a set of dining chairs, make sure they’re going to work with the table and the room.
How to find the right dimensions for your dining chair
55cm is a good standard width for an armless dining chair, but you can go larger than that if your dining table or dining room is especially big and would dwarf a normal-size chair.
Avoid chairs that are narrower than 43cm – they just don’t provide enough support for the derriere. For maximum comfort, choose chairs that are 50 to 55cm deep.
How to choose seating with the right height
Your seat height needs to be somewhere in the range of 43 to 48cm. Due to the dining table varieties, you might need to adjust the seat height accordingly.
Leave between 25 and 33cm from the chair seat to the underside of the tabletop.
Consider your Chair’s Moveability
Make sure to consider who will be using the chair. A chair that is too heavy or awkward to move is not suitable if children or the elderly often dine at the table.
How to choose the right upholstery fabric for your Dining Chair
Accidents are bound to happen, therefore stick to easy-care upholstery. When purchasing upholstered furniture, be aware that the higher the thread count, the more tightly woven the fabric is and the better it will wear. Thread count refers to the number of threads per square cm of fabric.

How to coordinate your Dining Chairs with your dining table
The key to a more interesting dining room design is a COORDINATED set of dining table and chairs – not a MATCHING one. I love how this eclectic dining room (below) mixes a set of chairs made from natural materials and crafted by hand.
I hope this post gave you some inspiration to mix it up a bit. Let me know in the comments below!
