There is a unique magic in the contrast of materials. In our Mediterranean homes, we are often blessed with beautiful stone walls — limestone that carries the warmth of the sun and the history of the islands.
But styling these walls can sometimes feel daunting.
How do you add personality without cluttering the natural beauty of the stone?
The answer often lies in ceramics.
This week, I helped a client install a vibrant ceramic plate, which I created in collaboration with the late artist Carmen Gaffiero, on a feature stone wall.
The result was a perfect example of why I love styling.
The smooth, glossy finish of the ceramic “pops” against the matte, porous texture of the stone. It becomes a dialogue between the refined and the raw.
We often think of ceramics only for tables or shelves.
But “Vertical Styling” — using your walls as a canvas for three-dimensional objects — adds depth that a flat framed print simply can’t match.
It brings a sense of craft, warmth, and tradition into a space, whether indoors or outdoors.
One of the most frequent questions I get is:
“Bea, how do you hang them without those distracting wire claws?”
The secret is that my ceramic plates are designed with discreet holes at the back, allowing wire to pass through so they can hang directly and beautifully against the wall.
If you have a piece that's been sitting in a cupboard waiting for its moment, I encourage you to bring it out today.
Need help choosing the perfect spot or piece? Get in touch — I'd love to help.
Handmade with love in Malta,
Bea
P.S. If you spotted a plate you loved in this post, it's from our handmade ceramic collection — each one is unique and made right here in Malta.
