Why Does Your Room Still Feel Unfinished?

5 things I check as an interior designer — before suggesting you buy anything else.

Have you ever looked around a room and thought, everything is here… so why doesn't it feel finished?

You have the sofa. The furniture is in place. You've chosen the curtains, added a few cushions and perhaps even bought the artwork.

And yet something still isn't quite right.

It's a question I hear often, and interestingly, it's also one that comes up again and again in online interior design conversations.

My first instinct is rarely “you need to buy something else.”

Before adding anything, these are the five things I would look at.

1. Is the layout actually working?

A room can contain beautiful furniture and still feel wrong if the pieces don't relate properly to one another.

Sometimes the sofa is pushed against a wall simply because that's where it fitted when you moved in. Perhaps the coffee table is too far away, the dining table interrupts the natural route through the room, or everything has been arranged around the television.

I look at how people actually move through and use a space.

Before buying anything new, try moving what you already own. Even shifting a chair, pulling a sofa slightly away from the wall or repositioning a side table can completely change the balance of a room.

2. Check the scale, not just the style

This is one of the easiest things to get wrong.

You can choose a beautiful rug, lamp or piece of artwork and still find that something feels off because its scale isn't right for the room.

A rug that's too small can make all the furniture around it feel disconnected. Tiny artwork floating above a large sofa can have the same effect. And several small accessories scattered around a room can sometimes create more visual clutter rather than making it feel complete.

Before deciding you need more, ask whether something you already have simply needs to be bigger, better positioned or grouped differently.

3. Look at your lighting at different times of day

Lighting changes everything.

A room that looks lovely during the day can feel surprisingly flat in the evening if the only light comes from the ceiling.

I like rooms to have different layers of light: perhaps a table lamp beside a sofa, a floor lamp in a darker corner or softer lighting around a dining area.

You don't necessarily need all of them.

The important thing is that your lighting suits what happens in the room.

And don't underestimate the warmth of the light itself. Sometimes changing a bulb can alter the atmosphere more than adding another decorative object.

4. Does the room need softness?

This is something I've always paid particular attention to because of my love of soft furnishings.

Curtains, rugs, cushions and upholstery don't simply decorate a room. They soften hard surfaces, help with acoustics and introduce colour, pattern and texture.

If a room contains plenty of furniture but still feels cold or unfinished, this is one of the first areas I'd examine.

But again, that doesn't mean filling the sofa with cushions.

One beautifully chosen fabric, a properly proportioned rug or curtains that frame a window well can do far more than lots of little additions.

5. Finally, does it feel like YOU?

This is the part that's hardest to buy.

Some rooms are perfectly coordinated and still feel strangely impersonal.

The homes I find most interesting usually contain something that tells me about the people who live there: artwork collected on a trip, books that are actually read, flowers cut from the garden, a favourite scent, something inherited, or an object chosen simply because its owner loves it.

These details don't have to match.

They have to belong.

Before you buy anything else…

If your room feels unfinished, resist the temptation to immediately go shopping.

Stand at the doorway and look again.

Is the layout working?
Is the scale right?
Is the lighting creating the atmosphere you want?
Is there enough softness and texture?
And does the room actually feel like you?

Quite often, the missing piece isn't another thing.

It's understanding what the room needs.

And that's always where I start.
