How to Create Your Home's Signature Scent

How to Create Your Home's Signature Scent

We spend a lot of time thinking about how our homes look — the colours, furniture, lighting, fabrics and accessories.

But there is another layer to a home that we don't always think about in quite the same way: how it smells.

I recently discussed this with Pauline Agius on INDHOUSE, looking at how fragrance can become part of the way we experience our interiors.

And perhaps the best place to begin is with one simple question:

How do you want your home to feel?

What exactly is a signature scent for a home?

A signature scent doesn't mean having an expensive bespoke fragrance created especially for your house.

It can simply be a fragrance — or even a family of fragrances — that you naturally keep coming back to and that makes your home feel like you.

I approach scent in much the same way that I approach an interior.

Before choosing colours, fabrics or finishes, I want to understand how someone wants a room to feel. You can do exactly the same thing with fragrance.

Do you want your home to feel fresh and Mediterranean? Warm and cocooning? Clean and understated? Floral and romantic? Woody and sophisticated?

Then think about the fragrances you already gravitate towards.

Your perfume, your garden, a favourite holiday, a hotel you always remember or even something from childhood can all give you clues.

Fragrance is incredibly personal because we instinctively connect smells with memories and experiences. During my recent INDHOUSE discussion, for example, one of the warm, spicy fragrances I brought with me immediately reminded members of the crew of chai latte.

That's why finding your home's scent isn't necessarily about knowing fragrance notes. Sometimes it's simply about noticing what a smell makes you feel or remember.

Don't start by asking, “What fragrance should I buy?” Start by asking, “How do I want my home to feel?”

Should the whole house have one scent?

Not at all.

In fact, I prefer to think in terms of a scent palette rather than one fragrance used throughout the entire house.

We wouldn't necessarily paint every room exactly the same colour, but we normally want some sense of flow as we move through a home.

Fragrance can work in the same way.

You might choose something fresh around the entrance, something warmer in your living space and something softer and more relaxing in the bedroom.

They don't need to be identical. They simply need to feel as though they belong to the same story.

Think scent palette rather than one scent everywhere.

Can you have too many fragrances in a home?

Yes — particularly when several fragrance sources overlap.

Remember that your home already has a scent before you light a candle or open a diffuser.

There's cooking, laundry, cleaning products, flowers, hand wash, perfume and all the other little smells of everyday life.

So before adding another fragrance, stop for a moment and notice what is already happening.

This becomes particularly important in an open-plan home.

Your kitchen and living room may have different functions, but fragrance doesn't stop at the imaginary boundary between the two. Treat an open-plan area as one scent zone.

And when several scents are likely to meet, I like one simple rule:

Let one lead and allow the others to sit quietly in the background.

Candle, diffuser, room spray or wax melt?

There isn't one “best” way to fragrance a home because they all do different jobs.

A reed diffuser gives you a continuous background fragrance. It quietly becomes part of the everyday atmosphere of a room.

A candle combines fragrance with atmosphere and ritual. It's something you deliberately choose to light — perhaps when you're relaxing, entertaining or settling down for the evening.

A room spray gives immediate fragrance and control. It's ideal when you want to change the atmosphere of a room quickly rather than scenting it continuously.

A wax melt is another intentional fragrance experience. You use your warmer when you want a more active scent experience.

So rather than asking which one is best, ask:

What job do I want the fragrance to do?

How do you make a home smell inviting without it smelling like air freshener?

My first answer might surprise you:

Open the windows.

A beautifully scented home begins with fresh air and removing unwanted odours, rather than trying to cover them with fragrance.

Only then should fragrance become another layer of the atmosphere.

And here, less really can be more.

Ideally, when someone walks into your home, you want them to think:

“Your home smells lovely.”

Not:

“What air freshener are you using?”

There's another reason to be careful about continually adding more fragrance. When we live with a scent for long periods, we can gradually become less conscious of it.

Your visitor may therefore notice your home fragrance much more strongly than you do.

Don't keep adding fragrance simply because you've stopped noticing it yourself.

Should your home's scent change with the seasons?

Absolutely — without losing its identity.

We already do this with interiors.

In spring and summer we might introduce lighter fabrics, fresh flowers and brighter colours. As autumn and winter arrive, we naturally gravitate towards warmer textures and a more cocooning atmosphere.

Fragrance can follow the same rhythm.

If your home's scent character is fresh, Mediterranean and slightly woody, for example, you might lean towards citrus, green, herbal and airy notes during spring and summer.

In autumn and winter, that same character could move towards woods, amber, spice and warmer citrus notes.

You haven't changed the identity of your home.

You've simply dressed it for another season.

Creating a home that feels like yours

Ultimately, fragrance shouldn't be something separate from your interior.

It can be another part of the experience you're creating — alongside colour, lighting, texture and all those small details that make a space feel personal.

Your home doesn't need to smell like everyone else's. And your signature scent doesn't have to mean using one fragrance forever.

It is about discovering the fragrance character that feels right for you, allowing it to evolve with your home, your lifestyle and even the seasons.

Because ultimately:

Your home's signature scent doesn't have to be one fragrance. It's the scent story that makes your home feel like yours.
