Thoughtful host gift ideas that feel a little more personal than another bottle of wine.
You’ve been invited to someone’s home for dinner, drinks or perhaps a weekend gathering.
Then comes the familiar question:
What should I take?
A bottle of wine is always an easy answer and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. But sometimes you want to arrive with something that feels a little more thoughtful. Something your host can enjoy after the evening is over.
When I’m choosing a host gift, I don’t think it needs to be expensive or elaborate.
I think it needs to feel considered.
Here are a few ways I approach it.
If your host enjoys interiors, flowers or styling their home, choose something they can actually use within it.
A small ceramic piece or vase can be a lovely option because it doesn’t dictate how it has to be used. It can hold flowers, sit on a shelf or table, or simply become part of the home.
I’m particularly fond of gifts that are beautiful but useful. They tend to stay around much longer than something bought simply for decoration.

Some people notice how a home feels as much as how it looks.
For them, a candle or home fragrance can make a lovely gift.
Scent is very personal, so I tend to choose fragrances that feel warm and welcoming rather than overpowering particularly when I don’t know someone's preferences very well.
It’s a simple gift, but one that can turn an ordinary evening at home into a little ritual.

This is where I like gifts that can become part of everyday life.
A beautiful salt and pepper duo, serving piece or something useful for the table works particularly well for someone who enjoys cooking and entertaining.
These are the gifts I love giving because they don't disappear into a cupboard after the occasion.
They get used.
And every time they come out, there's a little reminder of the person who gave them.

This is probably the trickiest situation.
Perhaps you're visiting someone for the first time, you've been invited by a colleague, or you simply don't know their home well enough to choose something decorative.
My advice is to keep it simple.
Choose something small, useful and beautifully presented rather than trying to guess their decorating style.
A candle, a small handmade soap, a home fragrance or a beautifully packaged little piece can feel thoughtful without asking the recipient to find a permanent place for it in their home.
Presentation matters here too. Even a small gift feels special when it looks as though some thought has gone into it.

Personalisation can turn a relatively simple present into something that feels chosen specifically for the recipient.
It doesn't necessarily need to mean putting someone's name across everything.
It could be choosing their favourite colour, selecting something that suits the way they entertain, adding embroidery to a textile piece or putting together a small combination of things you know they'll actually use.
The important part is that the gift says:
“I thought about you.”
A host gift isn't about matching the value of the dinner you're about to enjoy.
It's simply a gesture of thanks.
Flowers from your garden can be every bit as lovely as something bought. A favourite food, a candle, something handmade or a useful piece for the home can all work beautifully.
The best host gifts aren't necessarily the biggest or most expensive.
They're the ones that feel as though you thought about the person receiving them.
And if you're ever standing there thinking, “I have absolutely no idea what to take,” that's exactly the kind of gifting problem I enjoy solving at Bdesign.
